Former head of the General Security Department Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed called on Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) President Judge Antonio Cassese to restore public trust in the Lebanese court. In a statement released Monday by his press office, Sayyed urged Cassese to "carry out a series of steps that will restore Lebanese and Arab credibility in the Lebanese court.""Otherwise, it (STL) will be considered as a political tool, and all decisions and rulings taken by it will be subject to skepticism and challenge," the statement added. The International Tribunal "cannot claim to be neutral so long as it includes people like resigned Lebanese judge Ralph Riachi," Sayyed stressed. Sayyed, who was detained for four years in connection with the murder of ex-premier Rafik Hariri, was released in April 2009.
