Daily Star - Efforts Kick Off To Clear Akkar Forest Of Sandal Worm

BEIRUT: A campaign to combat the Sandal worm in the Morghan forest in Akkar’s Al-Kobayyat village kicked off on Saturday. Environmental and civil groups will spray pesticides to eradicate the worms which have spread throughout the forest. Kubayyat’s Mayor Abdo Abdo said the campaign would cover an area of around 35 kilometers but warned it was not enough. “We say to the ministry and agriculture minister that the Sandal worm has ruined Akkar’s woods and we call for their immediate intervention to tackle the issue,” Abdo said. Echoing Abdo, head of the Environment Council in Kobayyat Antoine Daher urged the government to intervene and take responsibility for the welfare of forests. – The Daily Star
