July 24, 2010 - Naharnet - Jumblat: We're on the Verge of a Very Critical Period in Our History

Today, we are on the verge of a very critical period in our history, Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat said Saturday, stressing that "Lebanon's special status mustn't bring national and nationalistic communication to an end."
"That's why the special relation with Damascus is a cornerstone and the Taef Accord highlights the special relation with Syria and truce with Israel," Jumblat added.

The Druze leader wondered what would have happened had he called for "an international tribunal the day Kamal Jumblat was assassinated."

Jumblat questioned the advantages of a U.N. tribunal "given that the moment Kamal Jumblat was murdered, ignorance and injustice killed tens if not hundreds of innocent Christians in Mount Lebanon."

"The hand of ignorance and injustice left them dead, would a U.N. tribunal been able to treat this issue – of course not."

"I'm saying this and perhaps I'd apologize later. The impending circumstances may be more severe -- or less severe if wisdom filled the minds of leaders who must shoulder the responsibility of national unity."
