July 24, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Pharaon: STL must not be politicized

Minister of State Michel Pharaon told MTV on Saturday that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) must not be politicized and must not lead to any conflicts.

This comes after Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said on Thursday that the tribunal would indict Hezbollah members for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, adding that his party would reject such an indictment. The Resistance leader’s words have increased tension in Lebanon and sparked a war of words between March 8 and 14 alliance figures.

“It is the government’s responsibility to defuse tension,” Pharaon said, adding that there should not be any arguments since the indictment has not been issued yet.

Pharaon also said that Syrian-Lebanese relations are good considering the latest current developments between the two countries, adding that there are more issues that the two countries still need to discuss.

This comes after Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s visit to Syria earlier in the week, during which he discussed ways to implement signed bilateral agreements with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
