Now Lebanon - Berri: Hariri’s statements are a positive step - September 8, 2010

Following his meeting with President Michel Sleiman at the Baabda Palace, Speaker Nabih Berri said that Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s statements are a positive step toward uncovering the truth behind the 2005 assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri, according to a statement issued Wednesday by Sleiman’s office.

In an interview with As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper published on Monday, Hariri said that accusations that Syria was behind the murder of former PM Rafik Hariri were political in nature.

Some people misled the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s (STL) investigation and thereby damaged Syrian-Lebanese relations and politicized the assassination, Hariri also told the daily.

Berri and Sleiman tackled the direct Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which re-launched in Washington on Thursday for the first time in 20 months.

These negotiations affect Lebanon, the speaker said, adding that the Lebanese must unite in order to protect their country.
