Tawhid Arab Party leader Wiam Wahhab said on Monday that US President Barack Obama’s Sunday remarks against Hezbollah “shows how important the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is for Israel.”
According to a statement issued by his office, Wahhab said that “the STL is important for Israeli politics,” a reference to unconfirmed reports that the tribunal will indict Hezbollah members for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
“Obama’s statements came to confirm that Hezbollah will be implicated in the assassination,” Wahhab added.
He also called for speeding up the formation of a new Lebanese cabinet headed by PM-designate Najib Mikati.
“The people can no longer wait, their interests are gridlocked.”
Wahhab also said that Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun should not be treated “in an impolite way,” a reference to the fact that the parties should respect Aoun’s cabinet demands.
In a speech to the American – Israeli Public Affairs Committee on Sunday, Obama pledged the US’s commitment to Israeli security. He said that his country “will stand up to groups like Hezbollah, who exercise political assassination and seek to impose their will through rockets and car bombs.”
Hezbollah will reportedly be indicted by the STL as part of the UN body’s investigation of Rafik Hariri’s murder.
