The Daily Star - Free speech group challenges Al-Akhbar ban - June 24, 2011

BEIRUT: SKeyes media foundation condemned Thursday what it said was Middle East Airlines’ policy of banning the distribution of the daily local newspaper Al-Akhbar, urging the carrier to reconsider its decision.
According to SKeyes, a media freedom watchdog group, MEA has banned the distribution of Al-Akhbar on its flights since March.
SKeyes contacted the MEA media office to ask about the reasons behind the ban, “but because MEA chairman Mohammad Hout was out of the office, we could not receive any clarification on the matter,” said a statement released by the organization.
“SKeyes denounces the ban on distributing Al-Akhbar newspaper onboard MEA flights without proper justifications, which the administration is required to give to the public,” the statement noted.
SKeyes said the move threatened freedom of expression and passengers’ right to information. “We call on the MEA to solve this matter quickly, especially because MEA is a public company and represents Lebanon to the world,” the statement added.
