Change and Reform bloc MP Ziad Aswad said on Tuesday that his bloc “is with achieving justice and uncovering the truth [behind the 2005 killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri].” However, he added: “We are against using the [UN-backed international] tribunal for other purposes.”
“We would support an objective tribunal that would conduct a proper and correct investigation,” he told Voice of Lebanon (100.5) radio.
Aswad commented on the political program of the newly-formed cabinet, saying that his bloc will wait until discussions on the ministerial statement end and then announce its position on the new government.
“It is hard to judge a cabinet before it has had a chance to launch its work, this will be a kind of [fabrication],” he said.
MPs will meet on July 5, 6 and 7 to discuss the ministerial statement, which has yet to be granted the parliament’s vote of confidence.
March 14 leaders, MPs and figures met on Sunday night at Le Bristol Hotel and issued a statement launching the national opposition that aims to bring down Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s cabinet unless the latter voices his adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 1757, upon which the international tribunal was founded.
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon on Thursday handed Lebanon's Attorney General Said Mirza arrest warrants for four members of the Iranian-and Syrian-backed Hezbollah in connection to the 2005 assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri.
However, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah on Saturday said he would never hand over the four, adding the Netherlands-based court was heading for a trial in absentia.
