SIDON, Lebanon: Three men were arrested on suspicion of setting fire to several vehicles and a shopping center in Sidon over the past two weeks.
Between 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday, three people, two of whom are cousins, were arrested in connection with the arson of five vehicles, including a school bus, following an extensive investigation.
Palestinian national Ahmad Hasan was arrested while he was allegedly attempting to set a furniture store on fire near the city’s Serail Saturday evening.
Another man, Jamal Badhadho, was also caught in the act trying to set a vehicle on fire in the city. Following his arrest, Jamal confessed that his cousin, Hasan Badhadho, had also been involved in the crime.
Sources said the three arrested men confessed to the crimes, but no information is available on their motives.
A judicial source said that Hasan confessed to setting five vehicles on fire including the school bus. The source added that all three suspects were heavily intoxicated at the time of their arrest.
The judicial source said the investigation is ongoing, under the supervision of the general prosecutor’s office in the south, to determine a motive behind the crimes as well as whether others were involved in the case.
Two men who were arrested last week under suspicion of setting the fires are no longer being investigated for the crimes.
Sidon MP Bahia Hariri praised Sunday the police efforts in conducting the investigation and increasing security measures to find those responsible for the incidents which have plagued the city.
Over the past two weeks, Sidon has witnessed several incidents of vehicles being set ablaze in the same way in different neighborhoods.
In light of the incidents, the sub-Security Council in the south convened last week at Sidon’s Serail to discuss the developments and create a security plan to confront them.
