BEIRUT: Four people were arrested on suspicion of incidents of setting alight vehicles and a shopping center in the city of Sidon, south of Beirut, judicial sources told The Daily Star Sunday.
One person was arrested at the scene where he had allegedly set fire to one truck and a commercial center before residents were able to extinguish the fire.
Judicial sources told The Daily Star that between 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday three people – all cousins – were arrested in connection with the burning of five vehicles, including a school bus, following extensive investigation.
One of the suspects, arrested at 3 a.m., confessed to the crimes. All three were heavily intoxicated at the time of their arrest.
The judicial source said that investigations are ongoing, under the supervision of the general prosecutor's office in the south, to discover the motivation behind the crimes.
In a separate case, residents were able to extinguish flames of a burning car belonging to Al Mamlouk family south of Sidon Saturday night. No suspects have yet been arrested in the case.
Similar cases have occurred in Sidon over the past two weeks where unknown people have set fire to vehicles. More people are expected to be arrested in the next 24 hours.
