Lawyer Tarek Shandab, who
represents detained Lebanese national Shadi al-Mawlawi, said in remarks
published on Tuesday that the arrest of his client was “illegal.”
“My client’s name is
mentioned in a case file present with a judge. The judge should have summoned
[Mawlawi]… instead of kidnapping him in a militia-style manner,” Shandab told As-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper.
“In my opinion, [Mawlawi]
was abducted by a [certain] party to be [executed], but when the [word of his
arrest got out], General Security changed the case and covered up for it by
taking [certain] legal procedure.”
According to press reports,
Mawlawi had been “lured” by General Security to a social services center in
North Lebanon’s Tripoli, where he was detained.
Deadly clashes first broke out on Saturday between Islamists and the army as
young demonstrators, sympathizers of the revolt in Syria, tried to approach the
offices of the pro-President Bashar al-Assad Syrian Social Nationalist Party.
The ensuing sectarian clashes have left eight people dead, including five on Monday, and nearly 50 wounded, prompting many people to flee the two rival neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh.
