BEIRUT:
The Lebanese Army freed a Lebanese man at midnight Friday who was kidnapped
last week, after exchanging gunfire with the kidnappers.
During
the exchange of fire with the man's kidnappers, one was killed and several were
wounded. A soldier was also wounded.
In
a statement released Saturday, the army said that following the abduction of
Andre Gerges Elias on May 5, army intelligence investigated the case and was
able to track the kidnappers to the Qammuaa area in Akkar, north Lebanon.
When
the army arrrived, the kidnappers began firing, prompting soldiers to respond
in kind.
Elias,
74, went missing last week while working on his property in Behwayta near his
village of Menyara in the Zghorta district of north Lebanon.
Elias’
workers said that on the day of his abduction they witnessed their employer hop
into a four-wheel-drive vehicle that approached him but said nothing seemed
unusual about it.
His
family told police that the kidnappers have repeatedly demanded a ransom of $2
million for Elias’ release.
An investigation has been
launched into the case.
