The Daily Star - How the HRC counts Syrians in Lebanon, May 19 2012

BEIRUT: HRC head Ibrahim Bashir provided a breakdown of various groups of Syrian nationals in Lebanon, in the wake of more than 14 months of popular unrest in their home country:
- Around 800,000 people, or “immigrants,” who were in the country legally before the crisis.
- Around 9,000 people who the HRC officially considers displaced and are registered with the body, including 6,000 in the north, mostly Akkar. Their movements are restricted to areas set by the government.
- A total of 25,000 to 28,000 people who are termed by the HRC as “new immigrants.” They have entered the country legally, largely since the beginning of this year, and can move freely around the country.
- Wounded Syrians, numbering around 700. They are included in the HRC’s official numbers of displaced.
