BEIRUT:
Supporters of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party protested Thursday outside
the Justice Palace in Beirut over the unresolved 2008 slaying of at least 11
SSNP loyalists.
Holding
pictures of the victims, some 40 protesters, including 20 lawyers, staged a
morning sit-in outside the Beirut Justice Palace and chanted slogans demanding
authorities bring those behind the “Halba massacre” to justice.
At
least 11 people were killed in Halba, in the north Lebanon region of Akkar, on
May 10, 2008. The incident was linked to street fighting in Beirut between pro-
and anti-government gunmen that erupted on May 7 over a Cabinet decision to
dismantle Hezbollah’s telecommunications network.
“Failure to bring justice
and hold the killers accountable is a disgrace to our justice system,” some of
the protesters chanted.
