The Daily Star - Khiam center head elected to intl. torture victims' group, June 27 2012


BEIRUT: The head of Lebanon’s Khiam Rehabilitation Center for victims of torture was elected a member of the council of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims, the Khiam center said Wednesday.
In a statement, the center said Mohammad Safa, its secretary-general, was elected along with two other members to oversee the IRCT’s operations in the Middle East and North Africa for a three-year term.
The council also includes members drawn from different regions such as North America and the Pacific.
Based in Denmark, IRCT is a nonprofit, independent organization that supports the rehabilitation of torture victims and works toward the prevention of torture worldwide.
The Khiam center is part of the IRCT, which comprises more than 140 independent organizations in over 70 countries.
