The Daily Star - Lebanon’s U.N. envoy named VP of Asia-Pacific Group, June 10 2012

BEIRUT: The U.N. elected Lebanon’s Ambassador Nawaf Salam as vice president of the Asia-Pacific group in the General Assembly, according to a statement issued Friday. Lebanon’s permanent mission to the U.N. said that “after fulfilling its mandate as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council for two years, Lebanon was elected vice president of the U.N. General Assembly for a one-year term from Asia and Pacific group for the 67th session of the U.N. General Assembly.”
The decision becomes effective in late September, when the session kicks off. Formerly called the Asian group, the Asia-Pacific group with 53 members is the second largest group after Africa, which has 54 members.
