BEIRUT:
The Prosecution Committee overruled Wednesday the investigative judge’s
decision to release Wisam Alaaeddine, charged with the attempted murder of
individuals inside Al-Jadeed television station.
The
committee, headed by Judge Nada Dakroub, overruled the decision by
Investigative Judge Ghassan Oueidat to release Alaaeddine and other defendants
accused last week of attempting to burn down the Al-Jadeed building in Beirut
and kill those inside.
The
committee decided to keep Alaaeddine in custody and remanded his case to
Ouiedat for further investigation.
Ouiedat
questioned Alaaeddine Tuesday for over two hours and decided to free him due to
a lack of evidence. The state appealed the decision and the case was
transferred to the Prosecution Committee.
Alaaeddine
was apprehended last week as several gunmen attacked Al-Jadeed station.
Hours
later, masked men closed several Beirut roads with burning tires to protest
Alaaeddine's arrest.
According to the country’s
Penal Code, the suspects could face prison with hard labor if proven guilty.
