The Internal Security Forces (ISF) issued a statement on Thursday, rejecting earlier announcements made by the representative of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) in Lebanon, Anwar Raja, after he accused ISF Intelligence chief Colonel Wissam al-Hassan of being behind Thursday’s clashes in the Bekaa town of Kfar Zabad.
Raja’s comments are unfounded, said the statement, calling on him to look into events taking place within his party “before making random and superficial accusations.”
Preliminary information show that PFLP-GC members led by party official Dureid Shaaban, who was allegedly asked to step down from his post, attempted to take over a PFLP-GC base located near Kfar Zabad, said the statement.
It added that four party members identified as Qassem Araji, Khaled Ramzi Araji, Mahmoud Alian and Rajeh Saleh were arrested after clashing with other party members tasked with defending the base.
Shaaban turned himself in to the Lebanese army-Intelligence Branch, said the statement, adding that the army launched investigations into the Kfar Zabad incident.
