July 22, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Sayyed Hussein: Government adheres to the STL

Minister of State Adnan as-Sayyed Hussein told NOW Lebanon on Thursday that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is not a matter of dispute between the Lebanese, adding that the government adheres to it.

This comes after Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah stirred up controversy during his Friday speech after saying that an indictment by the STL is an Israeli project designed to target Hezbollah.

Media outlets have reported that the tribunal might indict Hezbollah members for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Hussein said that he called for maintaining national dialogue in order to ensure Lebanon’s security during Wednesday’s cabinet session. All ministers agreed on the importance of decreasing tension, he added.

The minister also said that the cabinet agreed to file a complaint to the UN Security Council against Israel for spy rings uncovered in Lebanon since April 2009, adding that they are in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and Lebanon’s sovereignty.
