BEIRUT: The Japanese Embassy pledged over $22,000 Friday to improving the medical conditions of Palestinian refugees living in remote areas. In coordination with the Popular Aid for Relief and Development, the money donated in a ceremony attended by Japan’s ambassador to Lebanon, Koichi Kawakami, will be used to procure life-saving medical supplies and equipment and to improve staff training. With restricted access to the national health service, Lebanon’s 400,000 plus registered refugees rely overwhelmingly on the cash-strapped UN Relief and Work Agency and various NGO partners for primary health-care provision, which remains centered in the camps and big cities. –The Daily Star
