Long-term solutions must be devised to address problems in Lebanon’s prisons, the National News Agency (NNA) quoted President Michel Sleiman as saying on Thursday.
The state must impose its authority while keeping prisoners safe, Sleiman said after meeting with Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar, Internal Security Forces Director-General Achraf Rifi, and Gendarmerie Commander General Salah Gebran.
Solutions will be formulated according to the plan that Interior Minister Ziad Baroud has prepared and submitted to the cabinet, Sleiman said.
Families of Roumieh Prison inmates protested in front of the Justice Palace in Beirut on Thursday after reports that a large number of prisoners have been injured.
Security forces stormed the prison on Tuesday after talks failed to secure the release of three guards taken hostage by inmates who had been demanding amnesty and better conditions in the prison.
