BEIRUT: The number of Syrian refugee children registered for formal public education in Lebanon increased by 152 percent over the last three academic years, thanks largely to a drive by the Lebanese Education Ministry and the UNHCR, a report by the refugee agency said. It noted that 157,984 refugee children are registered for public schooling between kindergarten and Grade 9 (14 years old), up by over 51,000 since the last academic year.
The drive to enroll more students was organized by the Education Ministry, with the help of UNHCR, UNICEF, UNESCO and partner organizations, and the figures were released in a report titled “UNHCR Lebanon: Back to School.”
“Attending public school and receiving a certified education is seen by the Syrian refugee communities in Lebanon as a key priority. Without education, there’s no future for the children who will one day rebuild Syria,” said Mireille Girard, UNHCR Representative in Lebanon, in a press release accompanying the report. “Enrollment numbers are up, but too many children are still out of school or dropping out.”
The number is up from the 62,664 enrolled in 2013-14 and the 106,735 last year. However, it remains under half the 472,000 Syrian refugee children between the ages of three and 17 registered with UNHCR in Lebanon.
