August 4, 2010 - Now Lebanon - No talks to eliminate STL, Harb says

Labor Minister Boutros Harb told several newspapers on Wednesday that there have been no talks on eliminating the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) probing the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. He added that no one can predict when the tribunal will issue its indictment.

This comes after media reports claimed that the court will announce its verdict before the end of the year.

Harb also said that “the domestic situation is delicate but not as dire as it has been portrayed to be. The Arab leaders’ [visits] aimed to defuse the current tension in Lebanon.”

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visited Lebanon on Friday to ease up the domestic tension following Hezbollah General Secretary Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah stated that he refuses the STL’s indictment and accused it to be an “Israeli project” aiming to cause a domestic strife.

The minister said that no one called for dismantling Hezbollah. However, he did not elaborate further.
