August 9, 2010 - Now Lebanon - Nadim Gemayel accuses Syria of having hand in Rafik Hariri’s assassination

Kataeb bloc MP Nadim Gemayel said that his party still “politically accuses” Syria of being involved in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri while waiting for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL)’s pending indictment, according to a statement issued by his office on Monday.

“We will defend justice… the March 8 coalition parties consider the STL fake because of the false witnesses... who are in Syria. Why do they not turn the false witnesses to the tribunal for prosecution?” Gemayel asked.

Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in July that he doubts the STL’s credibility and called for forming a Lebanese commission to investigate the alleged false witnesses.

The STL held a public hearing in July over former General Security head Brigadier General Jamil as-Sayyed’s request for documents related to his imprisonment. Sayyed, who was jailed for four years for his alleged involvement in the Rafik Hariri assassination, claimed he is the victim of false witnesses.
