An activist group has called for a protest for Monday outside the Grand Serail to denounce the government’s handling of the ongoing trash crisis.
“In condemnation of the government’s recklessness and its preference of personal deals at the expense of people..., we call for a demonstration in Riad al-Solh Square in opposition to the (state’s) insistence on quotas and theft of public money,” a statement by the "Change is Coming" group said.
The protest will coincide with a Cabinet meeting called for by Prime Minister Tammam Salam earlier Friday to discuss Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb's proposal to export garbage.
Chehayeb has been overseeing talks to end the 5-month-long trash crisis.
The premier had held off on calling for a Cabinet meet until a solution could be found to the garbage crisis. The last Cabinet session was held on Sept. 9.
The You Stink campaign this week returned to the streets with several small protests in Beirut over the garbage crisis.
On Wednesday, demonstrators gathered outside the Beirut Justice Palace, and on Thursday they protested outside the finance and telecoms ministries, demanding the financial prosecutor look into corruption cases and release funds owed to municipalities.
