BEIRUT: Ten wounded Syrians were hospitalized in northern Lebanon Friday after entering the country through an illegal crossing at the border with Syria, a security official told The Daily Star.
The wounded were evacuated through the crossing of Al-Qusair near Wadi Khaled in the region of Akkar, the source said. The wounded refugees said Syrian security forces clashed with protesters before opening fire.
Among the wounded, six were hospitalized at Rahhal Hospital in Akkar, the source said, adding that the region of Wadi Khaled and Jabal Akroum saw a number of refugees arriving Friday after fleeing bordering Syrian towns.
The news came amid reports that Syrian security forces had shot dead at least 15 people and wounded scores during anti-regime protests in Damascus and other cities after Friday prayers.
Syrian rights groups say more than 1,300 people have been killed and 10,000 arrested in a brutal state crackdown on protesters, who since March have called for reform and a toppling of the Syrian regime.
Several thousand Syrian refugees have arrived in northern Lebanon since April, fleeing violence at home.
