Former Defense Minister Elias al-Murr commented on the release of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s indictment, and told LBC television that information suggesting that “Lebanese people are involved” in the attempt to assassinate him does not make him happy.
“The other party said that Israel was changing [certain] data. If we assume that this is true, then slander committed against us through its media means it helped Israel. It hurts me if [Lebanese people’s] involvement is true.”
Murr added that he has information that those who carried out the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri are the same people who attempted to assassinate him.
He also said that he did not accuse anyone of attempting to assassinate him, adding, however, that a person has the right to doubt.
“I doubted that a group from Hezbollah tried to assassinate me, and I told them that. Their response was they had nothing to do with it.”
Murr also called on Prime Minister Najib Mikati to respect international decisions particularly those pertaining to the STL.
The minister survived an assassination attempt in July 2005.
The STL said in a statement published on its website that the indictment and accompanying arrest warrants were transmitted to the Lebanese authorities on Thursday.
A judicial official told AFP that four Lebanese suspects are named in the indictment.
Local media said at least two of them were members of the Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, which has warned it would defend itself if accused.
