BEIRUT: The main priority for the opposition is that the new Cabinet commit to Lebanon's international obligations in drafting its policy statement, Future Movement MP Samir al-Jisr said Thursday.
"What matters for the opposition today is [for the Cabinet] to not disregard justice, and this can only be achieved through seriously committing to resolutions, especially as the international community insists on such a direction," Jisr told Voice of Lebanon radio station, adding that the March 14 coalition would meet and discuss the Cabinet's policy statement after it is put to a vote of confidence in Parliament, due to happen next week.
The March 14 alliance and the international community have put pressure on Prime Minister Najib Mikati's government to commit to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon investigating the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, as the March 8 majority in Mikati's Cabinet had repeatedly questioned the United Nations-backed court's credibility.
The 12-member ministerial committee, headed by Mikati, agreed Wednesday night on the final draft of the new government’s policy statement after overcoming differences on the Special Tribunal for Lebanon over the course of seven meetings.
