Future bloc leader MP Fouad Siniora said in a statement issued on Thursday that the Lebanese cabinet should respect the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s decisions and cooperate with it.
The STL’s indictment issued today is not a verdict, and it does not target a party or a sect, Siniora said, adding that a lot of statements in previous years have attempted to obstruct the work of the tribunal.
“We have always emphasized the importance of respecting the judicial standards that the UN and the STL were concerned about committing to.”
He also said that the release of the tribunal’s indictment contributes to putting an end to assassinations that threatened political life.
“Ever since we chose to work for establishing the STL, we confirmed that the motive behind it is not vengeance or political gain, but it is achieving truth that will unite the Lebanese people and not deepen their divisions.”
The STL said in a statement published on its website that the indictment and accompanying arrest warrants were transmitted to the Lebanese authorities on Thursday.
A judicial official told AFP that four Lebanese suspects are named in the indictment of the STL which is investigating the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Local media said at least two of them were members of the Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, which has warned it would defend itself if accused.
