Kataeb Party leader Amin Gemayel said on Thursday that he fears there is an attempt to empty the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s indictment of its content under the cover of civil peace.
“Today, the STL’s indictment was [released]. We vow to the families of martyrs and the Lebanese citizens that we will begin a new path so that Lebanon achieves its aspirations, and the people are relieved about their future.”
Gemayel said in a press conference that the newly-formed cabinet should announce a final word vowing to implement the tribunal’s demands.
He also voiced hope that everyone has self-control, adding “We attempt to achieve stability and consensus in Lebanon and dialogue cannot be without achieving what is right.”
The Kataeb leader also said that building countries, institutions and achieving partnership and unity is based on truth.
“Justice should be [achieved] and should tackle anyone no matter what position he holds.”
Gemayel also requested security and judicial bodies to carry out their duties to implement the international resolution.
“We do not accept any failure and the political authority has to implement the decision.”
He added that all democratic means possible will be resorted to so that the international resolution is implemented.
The arrest warrants are the first step and we hope that all the following steps will be as serious, Gemayel added in reference to a report earlier saying that the STL submitted a sealed indictment and arrest warrants to Lebanon’s Prosecutor General Said Mirza.
A judicial official told AFP that four Lebanese suspects are named in the indictment.
Local media said at least two of them were members of the Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, which has warned it would defend itself if accused.
The UN-backed STL, based near The Hague, is investigating the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
