The Daily Star - Two arrested in army raid in Bekaa Valley - June 29, 2011

BEIRUT: Two men were arrested during a raid launched by the Lebanese Army in the Bekaa Valley town of Saadnayel, a statement issued by the military said Tuesday.
Prior to the arrests, the raid led to a clash between the members of the Freij family and a Lebanese Army unit that was on a mission to confiscate various types of arms in the area, a security source told The Daily Star.
According to a security source, the Lebanese Army confiscated an underground depot of weapons and ammunition belonging to several members of the Freij family.
The sources said the army arrested Ali and Omar Freij, who were taking part in the violent confrontation with the Lebanese Army.
However, the sources added that no injuries were reported following a brief gunfire exchange between the two sides.
The Army statement said the two men and the confiscated weapons were handed over to the judiciary.
Clashes between local residents and the Lebanese Army have been rare in the past few years except incidents involving drug of weapon dealers in the Bekaa Valley area.
