The Daily Star - Dead cows seen on Jounieh, Batroun coast - June 09, 2011

BEIRUT: Dead cows were seen floating in the sea off Jounieh and Batroun Thursday, as Lebanon’s most popular beaches prepared for the summer season.

For three days in a row, witnesses reported seeing dead cows on the coast of Jounieh and Batroun, threatening not only the tourism sector but also the environment.

An Environment Ministry source said that the ministry had not received an official report concerning the dead cows, adding that the accounts that emerged Thursday were suspicious.

Some of the cows beached on the coast had begun to produce putrid odors by Thursday afternoon, angering many beachgoers and local residents.
