ALEY: Relatives of an elderly Syrian opposition figure, Shibli Aisamy, are urging Lebanese and Syrian authorities to uncover the circumstances behind his kidnapping in Aley last month, and will hold a march this weekend to highlight the case.
A statement released by his family and close relatives said that revealing the truth behind the abduction would deal a blow to attempts by some to involve Lebanon in “narrow conflicts aimed at settling political scores.”
“The sons of Shibli Aisamy appeal to the international, Arab and Lebanese publics, as well as humanitarian and civil rights groups, and Lebanese political and judicial authorities to immediately uncover the fate of our father,” the statement said.
Alaisamy, 86, a former deputy for the Syrian president and a founder of the Baath party, resigned from political work in 1992 and defected from Assad’s ruling party, according to his family.
“Lebanon was always a sanctuary for intellectuals and politicians around the world and the fate of our father is the responsibility of the Lebanese and Syrian states,” the statement added.
The statement said Aisamy’s supporters will hold a peaceful march in Aley Saturday to demand his immediate release and to prevent his fate from being tied to the “political tug-of-war.”
Judicial sources told The Daily Star that investigations have yet to turn up a firm lead regardingthe case.
