Libyan rebel National Transitional Council chief Mustafa Abdul Jalil confirmed that witnesses can reveal the truth about the disappearance and the fate of Shiite Imam Moussa al-Sadr.
Abdul Jalil told the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Anbaa on Thursday that he discussed the issue with some Lebanese officials. “We are ready to offer help if the Lebanese cabinet asked us to,” he said.
Al-Sadr and two of his companions Sheikh Mohammed Yaacoub and journalist Abbas Badreddine disappeared in 1978 after they had departed for Libya to meet with government officials. Lebanon has accused Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi of involvement in their disappearance.
“We have enough evidence and witnesses that can lead us to the truth, but this is an issue for the future, after we liberate the Libyan lands” from Gadhafi’s rule, he said.
The Council’s chief stressed that relations with Lebanon are “excellent.”
Abdul Jalil expressed the council’s satisfaction with the stances taken by Lebanon at the U.N. Security Council. Lebanon currently represents Arab counties at the Council.
