Now lebanon - Kanaan supports proportional electoral law. October 2, 2011

Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Sunday that an electoral law based on “proportional representation provides representation to all sects.”
He added that proportionality “is the best suggestion that can provide representation for Christians,” the National News Agency reported.
Lebanese parties are debating a new electoral law for the upcoming 2013 parliamentary elections.  After the parliament agreed on drafting a law based on proportional representation, some parties rejected the draft law and called for renewing the 2009 electoral law, which is based on simple majority representation.
Regarding the issue of the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), Kanaan said that “his bloc was the first to demand the STL establishment, but it has some remarks to give on it.”
He also said that discussions on Lebanon’s share of funding for the STL “should happen in the cabinet.”
The UN-backed tribunal, which is investigating into the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, is funded by an assortment of donor countries from around the world and Lebanon, which contributes 49 percent of the annual funding.
However, Hezbollah and other March 8 parties and figures have spoken out against Lebanon’s ties and funding for the tribunal and called it a tool to incite sectarian strife in Lebanon.
