Now lebanon - Sunni Council: Mikati to finance the STL, October 1, 2011

The Sunni Council - which handles legal matters - headed by Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani met on Saturday and issued a statement saying that Prime Minister Najib Mikati will finance the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).
“The council confirms that Mikati pledged in front of the UN that his cabinet will finance the UN-backed court, which was assembled to achieve justice and punish the killers of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and his companions,” the statement said.
Hezbollah-led March 8 parties – which currently dominate Lebanon’s cabinet – have opposed a clause in the Lebanese annual state budget pertaining to the funding of the tribunal which is probing the 2005 assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri.
Four Hezbollah members have been indicted by the STL. However, the Shia group strongly denied the charges and refuses to cooperate with the court.
Following his meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Mikati reiterated his commitment to international resolutions.
The council also called on the Arab regimes to stop the bloodshed and the violation of human rights.
“It is our duty, according to [Islamic] rules, to support the oppressed,” the statement added.
The UN says that the Syrian regime's crackdown on protests that erupted in mid-March has killed more than 2,700 people.
