The Daily Star - Journalists union warns of sector collapse - June 10, 2011

BEIRUT: The Journalists Union urged the government Thursday to support efforts to counter what it called the deterioration of print media in the country, arguing that the sector was faced with the threat of “collapse.”
The union voiced concerns over journalists who were laid off recently under the pretext of cutting expenditures to conserve limited financial resources.
The union also lamented delays in paying salaries and social security benefits. “Newspaper owners and the Lebanese state share equal responsibility for this deterioration and officials should act to support the journalism sector before it collapses,” a statement released by the union said. The statement questioned the benefits of ratifying new laws to regulate the media sector while it is “on the verge of collapse.”
