Syria’s Ambassador Ali
Abdul Karim Ali lauded on Friday the Lebanese General Security’s deportation of
14 Syrians, describing the move as “reassuring.”
Following talks with
former Premier Salim Hoss in Beirut’s Aisha Bakkar district, Ali said: “The
General Security’s move came in line with international standards.”
The deported Syrians
were wanted for common law not political offences, he said.
The ambassador
criticized the “panic” that erupted after the deportation, saying “on the
contrary this is reassuring and we hope that agreements signed between the two
countries would be respected.”
On Thursday, Progressive
Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat slammed General Security chief Maj. Gen.
Abbas Ibrahim for deporting the 14 men despite fears of prosecution.
The issue was also
discussed during a cabinet session that witnessed heated talks among the
ministers.
According to Human Rights
Watch, some of the deportees had expressed fears of persecution on their
return.http://www.naharnet.com/stories/en/48805
