BEIRUT: U.N. humanitarian chief
Baroness Valerie Amos said Thursday the organization would increase its
financial support for Lebanon's government in order to better aid Syrian
refugees in the country.
Following her meeting with Social
Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour, Amos said the U.N. would continue supporting
the Lebanese state and the ministry by increasing financial aid.
She also thanked the Social Affairs
Minister and Lebanon for keeping the borders open.
The U.N. official added that the
number of displaced inside Syria has reached 2.5 million, while thousands of
refugees are in Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Jordan.
For his part, Abu Faour said the
meeting was an opportunity to “affirm to international officials Lebanon’s
commitment to upholding its humanitarian duty in aiding Syrian refugees,”
adding that the refugees “are not in danger or subject to measures that might
place their lives at risk.”
He also said the U.N. should take
into consideration the fact that the security situation is not fully under the
control of the government.
“I spoke to the international
officials about Lebanon's need for financial support [in light of] the burden
on the Lebanese state,” he told reporters.
Lebanon has prepared an emergency plan that
includes the participation of the ministries of health, education and social
affairs as well as the Higher Relief Committee.http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Politics/2012/Aug-16/184840-amos-un-to-increase-financial-aid-for-lebanons-syrian-refugee-efforts.ashx#axzz23pl5xycQ
