BEIRUT: Lebanon’s General Security
said Tuesday that accusations by March 14 MP Henry Helou over the alleged
confiscation of the passport of a Lebanese activist were unfounded.
General Security said in a statement
that Helou’s accusations regarding rights activist Wissam Tarif were founded on
false information.
It did not provide details as to whether
Tarif’s passport had been confiscated, and no reasons were given as to what may
have motivated such an action.
“The confiscation of Wissam Tarif’s
passport by General Security is an attack on democracy and freedom, and a
violation of human rights,” Helou said Tuesday.
Tarif works with Avaaz, a civic
group which has been providing relief to anti-regime Syrian activists.
“Do they want to take us back to the
pre-2005 period when ... Samir Kassir was harassed ... when he started speaking
of the Damascus Spring?” Helou said, referring to when General Security
confiscated the passport of Kassir, a renowned journalist and activist known
for his opposition to the Syrian regime.
Media Against Violence condemned Monday the
confiscation of Tarif’s passport. “Wissam Tarif’s passport was confiscated just
because he supports the Syrian uprising,” a statement issued by the
organization read.http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Politics/2012/Aug-08/183819-general-security-mps-claims-on-activists-passport-unfounded.ashx#axzz22xYTtmO5
