Now Lebanon - Ad-Diyar: Jumblatt says US, France made no promises regarding STL indictment - September 5

Ad-Diyar newspaper reported on Sunday that Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt said that neither France nor the US promised to take any action related to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s (STL) pending indictment.

This comes in a possible reference to Jumblatt’s meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman in Paris last month. Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Anbaa reported that in this meeting Jumblatt warned that an STL indictment accusing Hezbollah members of the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri would destroy Lebanon.

According to an exclusive interview with NOW Lebanon published last Tuesday, STL Prosecutor General Daniel Bellemare said that the tribunal will not file an indictment in the case of the murder of former PM Rafik Hariri in September.

Julmblatt voiced his fear for the country’s stability, Ad-Diyar also reported, adding that he thought a meeting between Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah would improve Lebanon’s tense political situation.
