The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will cross off the names of 5,500 Syrian refugees who have entered Lebanon following entry restrictions, Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbas has said.
“The UNHCR informed me yesterday [Tuesday] that it has decided to cross off 5,500 Syrian refugees who have entered Lebanon after the beginning of this year,” Derbas told local daily Al-Liwaa in remarks published Wednesday.
He said the measure was in response to a complaint he has filed with the UNHCR, protesting the U.N. agency’s violation to a government decision that restricted the entry of Syrian refugees into Lebanon.
Last October 2014, Derbas announced that only Syrians with exigent humanitarian needs will be granted refugee status in Lebanon after the total number of registered refugees have reached 1,100,000.
Derbas did not elaborate if Lebanon will deport the Syrians crossed off the list or let them remain in the country.
