The Daily Star - Ten arrested after Syria protests in Beirut - July 25, 2011

BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army arrested at least 10 people after violence broke out in Beirut late Sunday between pro- and anti-Syrian government protesters, a security source said Monday.
The source told The Daily Star that the detainees are awaiting interrogation.
Sticks and stones were thrown between some 200 opponents and supporters of Syria's President Bashar Assad in the Beirut neighborhood of Bir Hasan Sunday evening before army troops stepped in and dispersed demonstrators.
The clashes came after about 2,000 people rallied outside the Syrian Embassy in Hamra in a peaceful demonstration in a show of support for Assad, who has been facing pro-democracy protests since mid-March.
“Assad will stay president of Syria and his son will be president of Syria,” said Mohammad, 28, a protester in Hamra who declined to give his last name.
Syrian Ambassador Ali Abdel-Karim Ali, who spoke to protesters, said his country will remain strong and will overcome all difficulties. “Syria will remain committed to resistance and the aspirations of its citizens,” he said.
