BEIRUT:
An inmate at Roumieh prison, the country’s largest detention center, died in
hospital overnight, a security source told The Daily Star Thursday.
The
source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Raymond Aziz Msallam died of
illness in the nearby Al-Hayat Hospital late Wednesday night.
It
was not immediately clear whether Msallam’s illness was brought on by a general
hunger strike at the prison facilities.
He was among dozens of
Roumieh inmates who launched the hunger strike earlier this month in an effort
to pressure authorities to reduce the prison term from one year to nine months.
