iloubnan-Fatfat promises near stance by Future on Orthodox electoral law, December 20, 2011

Member of Parliament Ahmad Fatfat promised on Tuesday a near official stance by "Future Movement" from the Orthodox draft electoral law.

In a Bkerki meeting, Maronite leaders agreed on Friday to support the Orthodox Gathering's draft electoral law, and designated a committee to discuss the proposed law with Lebanese officials.

"Future Movement looks forward to coming out, along with its March 14 allies, with an electoral law that harmoniously fits our basic beliefs in coexistence, Taef Accord, and Lebanese Constitution," the Future Bloc MP told the "Voice of Lebanon" radio station.

"The most important part of Bkerki's post meeting statement is that it keeps the door wide open before negotiations," Fatfat added, expressing relief at the fact that the law was open to all possibilities and suggestions.

Responding to allegations that Future Movement would snub the Orthodox electoral draft fearing it would end up being the biggest loser, Fatfat reminded of all the times at which similar claims had been voiced and Future Movement ended up reaping the majority of votes.

Moreover, Fatfat chose to blame the Lebanese cabinet for the deteriorating security situation in Lebanon. "As for the situation in Tripoli, Prime Minister Najib Mikati holds multiple responsibilities, for he was the first to propose rendering Tripoli city a weapon free zone."
