BEIRUT: Hannibal Gadhafi's lawyer Monday suspended his duties "indefinitely," accusing Lebanese authorities of conspiring against the judiciary.
"Gadhafi's case, who has been abducted for the past year, shows the malfunction in Lebanese judiciary," Akram Azouri, Gadhafi's lawyer, said in a news conference.
He accused Lebanese authorities of collaborating with the Sadr family by refusing to take a position on the case.
"In today's session, President of the Court of Cassation Judge Jean Fahed demanded the state [representatives] to take a stance but they refused," Azouri said.
Hannibal has been in Lebanese custody since December 2015 over the disappearance of Amal Movement founder and Shiite Imam Musa Sadr and his companions 37 years ago.
Sadr and his two companions, Sheikh Mohammad Yaacoub and journalist Abbas Badreddine, went missing on Aug. 31, 1978, during an official visit to Libya at the invitation of Moammar Gadhafi.
The attorney denied that Gadhafi had information regarding the abduction of Sadr. "Gadhafi is held on charges of lying despite confirming that he has no information on the case."
"This decision is final until the charade held before the Court of Cassation ends and until authorities end its conspiracy on the judiciary," he added.
He called on authorities to stay out of Justice Ministry affairs.
"Hannibal Gadhafi remains under arrest only because of his name," he added.
Sadr family lawyer, Chadi Hussein, responded to Azouri’s move, accusing him of seeking to "deceive the public, judiciary and media with false information."
"We call on him to act with conscience as he has the right to defend any criminal but it doesn't mean he can violate the sacred rights by the Court of Cassation."
The statement added that the "charade that [Azouri] is speaking of is merely made by his fantasies," claiming that he seeking to pressure the judiciary.
