Future Movement official Mustafa Allouch said on Thursday that handing the seven Estonians to the French Embassy is “a symbol of intelligence and propaganda,” adding that “it is a very cheap price to pay to avoid the scandal of the attack on the French Embassy in Damascus.”
The Lebanese cabinet “tried to say” that the issue of the kidnapped Estonians was resolved between Lebanon and Estonia, but Estonia said a third party was involved in the matter, Allouch told MTV, inquiring about who controls security in the Bekaa area.
He also said that the abduction would not have happened if it had not been for the presence of non-state arms, and added that Hezbollah “can [persuade] the party [behind] the abduction.”
Allouch also commented on the formation of the cabinet, saying it was “imposed” by the “dominance” of arms.
“The cabinet is legitimate on a constitutional level but not legitimate on a democratic level,” he told MTV.
Seven kidnapped Estonians were freed in Lebanon Thursday, almost four months after being abducted by armed men as they entered the country on a bicycle tour from neighboring Syria.
Najib Mikati’s cabinet, which was formed on June 13, was granted parliament’s vote of confidence last week.
Angry mobs stormed the French embassy in Syria on Monday, after the French envoy visited the city of Hama, a flashpoint for protests against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
