March 14 General Secretariat coordinator Fares Soueid called on Hezbollah to not protect the individuals indicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) in order for the party not be accused for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Hezbollah announced it will not cooperate with the STL just as it collapsed former PM Saad Hariri’s cabinet in order to confront the tribunal, he told LBC television on Thursday evening.
Soueid also said that Hezbollah brought PM Najib Mikati to power, asking, “How can this cabinet fulfill the needs of the Lebanese people who call for justice?”
The STL said in a statement published on its website that the indictment and accompanying arrest warrants were transmitted to the Lebanese authorities on Thursday.
A judicial official told AFP that four Lebanese suspects are named in the indictment.
Local media said at least two of them were members of the Iranian and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, which has warned it would defend itself if accused.
Before bringing down Saad Hariri’s cabinet in January, Hezbollah had been pressing him to disavow the tribunal, which is probing the Rafik Hariri murder and likely to implicate members of the Shia group.
