Now Lebanon - Syrian envoy to Iran says STL is politicized - July 12, 2011

Syrian Ambassador to Iran Hamed Hassan criticized a UN-backed court probing the 2005 murder of former PM Rafik Hariri and 21 others.

“This [Special Tribunal for Lebanon] is politicized, it aims to incite chaos and sectarianism in Lebanon," he said according to the Iranian Mehr news agency.

"The Lebanese people know very well the intentions of this tribunal,” added Hassan.

The STL handed two weeks ago Attorney General Judge Said Mirza arrest warrants for four members of the Iranian-and Syrian-backed Hezbollah in connection to the killing of Hariri.

However, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said last week said that his party will never hand over the four, adding that the Netherlands-based court was heading for a trial in absentia.
