Tawhid Arab Party leader Wiam Wahhab said on Monday that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon will not achieve any result, adding that it is “politicized and not credible.”
He also told MTV that he who thinks that Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s cabinet’s “only concern is to constantly struggle with the STL” is wrong, adding that Mikati will deal with the tribunal “just as much as” former PM Saad Hariri did.
Commenting on events in Syria, Wahhab said security will be lost in the region if it is lost in Syria.
“There is no international decision to overthrow the Syrian regime. Even if there is, it will not happen [quickly], but there will be a big problem in the region.”
Most of the Syrians support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Wahhab also said, calling on all Syrian opposition parties to engage in a serious dialogue with the regime.
The Syrian government is engaged in a deadly crackdown on protesters who since March have been demanding the end of 48 years of rule by the Baath Party, which is controlled by Assad.
The STL last week handed Lebanon's Attorney General Said Mirza arrest warrants for four members of the Iranian-and Syrian-backed Shia group in connection to the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Following the release of the indictment, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah ruled out the arrest of the four members indicted. He also rejected "each and every void accusation" made by the Netherlands-based court, which he said was heading for a trial in absentia.
The whereabouts of the four remain unknown.
